A timeless classic

What Car: 1981 MERCEDES 280 SL

This beautiful, timeless 1981 Mercedes 280 SL sports car was bought by its owner Danny as he wanted a classic sports car to  have some fun in on the way to the golf club on weekends. But as with all classic cars things had started to look a bit tired so he booked the Merc in with us for some minor paintwork, this however opened up a can of worms.

MORE THAN MEETS THE EYE

With all classic cars you never really know what you are dealing with until you start to remove the paint and unfortunately for this classic Merc things were worse than first met the eye and would take many man hours to get it back to looking this good.

NO MORE PAPERING OVER THE CRACKS

We started by stripping off the paint which revealed a lot of patch up work underneath 22 layers of paint, pug and fibreglass. So after speaking to Danny the owner we all agreed that the best way forward was a full body restoration to bring this classic back to it’s former glory.

BACK TO BARE METAL

With the panels taken back to bare metal we managed to save the doors, front wings, bonnet and boot lid. We then started to replace the rotten panels with fresh metal, welding in complete sills, front cross members, jacking points and rear and inner wings, essentially the complete back end. With the metal work complete the car was coated in the original Mercedes Silver paint and then to finish things off it headed to the upholsterers for a full re trim. Danny can now drive a classic Merc that looks as good now as it did 38 years ago when it left the dealership.
